One of the greatest wonders of nature is a reproduction. One of life's greatest gifts to couple is a child of their own. As such, if a couple is childless it is something that makes them despair and can be a frustrating experience.

Infertility means inability to concieve,dispite of regular unprotected sexual,intercourse for more than 1 year. Women who can get pregnant but are unable to continue pregnancy may also be infertile.

Causes of Infertility in Females:

  1. PCOD
  2. Anovulatory cycle
  3. Fallopian tubal block
  4. Uterine fibroid
  5. Positive torch test
  6. Endo metoriosis
  7. Bad obstretic history - Recurrent Abortions
  8. Stress factor

Cause of infertility in male:

  1. Varicocele: This happens when the veins on the testicles are too large and tortous causing increased thermal effect on the testicles. This effects the count up motility of the sperm.
  2. Decreased motility: This may be caused by the abnormal shape of the sperm. Sometimes injuries or other damage to the reproductive system, effects the sperm motility.
  3. Heavy alcohol use
  4. Erectile dysfunction.
  5. Smoking tobacco chewing.
  6. Drugs
  7. Health problems such as mumps, kidney diseases, hormonal imbalance.
  8. Radiation treatment or chemotherapy for cancer.
  9. Environmental toxins including pesticides & lead.

Steps of pregnancy:

  1. Ovulation: A women must release an egg from one of her ovaries. The egg must go through a fallopian tube towards the uterus.
  2. Fertilization: A male sperm must unite with egg in the tube.
  3. Implantation: The fertilized egg must get attached to the inside of the uterus. Any problem in any of these steps results in infertility.Females accounts for 1/3rd of infertility cases while males accounts for the same proportion. Rest of 1/3rd cases the causes remain unexplained.

  1. Rutu - If is the most fertile period governed by kapha. In terms of modern medicine, accompanied with ovulation.
  2. Kshetra - Manusmeiti discribes the female as a field and male as a seed. The healthy undiseased condition of female genital tract is the second chief factor of conception.
  3. Ambu - It is the liquid product produced for the diet & present in the term of rasa. In other words, it represents nutrional elements responsible for the growth of foetus.
  4. Beeja - Beeja includes stree beeja and pumsa. Beeja that is ovum & sperm. The term"Shudha Shukra Shonita" stresses on healthiness of both rather than on their mere presence.

Consuming herbal ghee during pregnancy: Ayurveda recommends adding medicated ghee made from cow's milk to your diet during 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th month of Preganancy. It is said to beneficial for the mental & physical development of the baby, and can help to prevent congenital abnormalities in the foetus. According to Ayurveda, medicated ghee might also help the mother have a full- term normal delivery.

Post- natal Ayurvedic care:The first three months or to be precise the 45days after delivery are crucial for new mothers. Ayurveda has mentioned specific regimen for new mothers prevet post- partum illness and improve her health upto 45 days to 6 months.

This period is of happiness and contentment, on one hand and physical and mental fatigue due to delivery, on the other hand, she become weak or emaciated after loss of blood and body fluid during delivery. The lady after such a difficult process of prasava must be advised certain mode of life called "Sutika paricharya". This regimen that helps the woman to regain her lost vitality and helps her body to revert back to pre-pregnant state to restore health and streangth.
